Craig Pearce is a strategic communications professional and a former colleague of mine. He writes consistently on PR and in my view has chiseled out a position for himself as one of the thought leaders on PR in Australia. I use the word ‘chiseled’ because writing insightfully about communications (in your own voice and from the heart) must be like sculpting an artwork out of rock – it takes skill, time, dedication and persistence.
Today, Craig has posted about life as a sole operator and I provided this cartoon for the story. As a micro business myself, it’s a topic very close to my heart. To be honest, I can’t see myself ever working another way. His post really tackles the advantages and drawbacks of this business model. My cartoon, supporting his themes of ‘making hay while the sun shines’ and ‘feast and famine’ asks: do sole operator’s ever stop working? Can they ever “clock off”?

23 days until Christmas. Working like a lunatic? In years gone by were things a little more balanced and enjoyable as Christmas approached? I’m not sure but it sounds like everyone I talk to is working harder than ever. Agree or disagree?

Is your life squeezed to fit within your work or is your work simply a small part within your life?

I tuned in today to watch Viocorp’s Future Forum webcast on the “Future of news reporting”. A good panel with interesting insights and discussion. It got me thinking about another theme - how future generations may view the current or ‘old’ technology we use to consume ‘media’. One day (…perhaps in the not so distant future), will the TV be completely alien to a younger age group?

Having had a few days to stew over the Socceroos World Cup effort, I think ending on a high will really set the tone for getting to the next World Cup. The victory over Serbia was a good one with two great goals and fans and new players coming up through the ranks have lots to look forward to. The momentum and spirit would be entirely different if we’d lost. Instead, I feel Aussie spirits may be deflated but not demoralised. Here’s to the build up for Brazil 2014.
